Combo Resistance Tester – Description

A Combo Resistance Tester (also known as a Combo Tester or Wrist Strap and Footwear Tester) is a multi-function ESD test device used to verify the performance of personnel grounding devices, specifically wrist straps, heel grounders, and ESD footwear. It ensures that these devices are operating within acceptable resistance thresholds, helping prevent static buildup that could damage sensitive electronic components.

These testers are commonly used at entry points to ESD Protected Areas (EPAs) in electronics manufacturing, assembly lines, labs, and cleanroom environments.

Key Features

  • Dual-function testing: Simultaneously tests both wrist straps and footwear to ensure full-body grounding compliance

  • Pass/Fail indicators: Visual LED lights (and sometimes audio alerts) signal whether the resistance is within the acceptable range

  • Adjustable resistance limits: Configurable high and low resistance thresholds (commonly from 750KΩ to 35MΩ or more)

  • Hands-free operation: Users simply stand on test plates and touch a sensor plate to complete the circuit

  • Wall-mount or freestanding: Can be installed near EPA entry points or mounted on pedestals or turnstiles

  • Data logging (optional): Some advanced models offer logging or badge-reader integration for audit tracking and compliance documentation

  • Battery or AC powered: Portable units run on batteries; fixed stations often include AC adapters

  • Display options: LED indicators, LCD screens, or touchscreen interfaces depending on model

Common Applications

  • EPA entry points: Used to verify personnel grounding before entering static-sensitive zones

  • Production lines: Ensures continued compliance throughout shifts in electronics or semiconductor manufacturing

  • Quality assurance: Confirms that ESD protective gear is functioning as intended during audits or inspections

  • Training centers: Demonstrates correct ESD control procedures in educational settings

  • Cleanroom facilities: Ensures that both wrist and foot grounding devices meet cleanroom and static safety requirements

Benefits

  • Complete personnel grounding verification: Tests both wrist straps and footwear in one step, ensuring full ESD compliance

  • Quick and easy operation: Streamlines the ESD check-in process with fast, intuitive testing

  • Supports compliance programs: Helps meet ESD standards such as ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340

  • Reduces ESD risks: Ensures faulty or disconnected grounding devices are detected before sensitive work is performed

  • Customizable options: Available with multiple features like dual-foot testing, access control, or automated data recording

  • Long-term savings: Helps avoid costly failures or defects caused by undetected static discharge
