SMT Stapler & Splice Clips – Overview

An SMT Stapler Splice Clip system is used in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly to mechanically splice two component tapes using metal clips and a splicing stapler (also called a splicing tool or crimper). This method ensures a strong, accurate, and durable splice that feeds smoothly through pick-and-place machines.

What Is an SMT Stapler?

The SMT stapler is a handheld or benchtop tool that:

  • Inserts and presses metal splice clips (also known as shims or staples) into the carrier tape

  • Aligns and joins the end of an empty reel with the beginning of a new one

  • Ensures proper pitch alignment (typically 4mm for 8mm tape) and secure bonding

What Are Splice Clips?

Splice clips are small metal U-shaped or shim-style connectors used to:

  • Mechanically bond two pieces of SMD component tape

  • Reinforce the splice and prevent separation during high-speed feeding

They’re typically made of brass or stainless steel and are often used with or without adhesive tape, depending on the process.

Key Benefits

  • Strong mechanical bond – prevents splice failure in fast feeders

  • Accurate pitch alignment – ensures smooth feeding and correct component placement

  • Reusable and consistent – especially in automated or semi-automated splicing

  • Compatible with paper and embossed plastic tapes

Compatibility

  • Tape widths: 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, 24mm, and more

  • Clip types: U-clip, shim-style, or precision punched

  • Stapler compatibility: Works with most industry-standard SMT splicing staplers

Typical SMT Splicing Kit Includes:

  • Splicing stapler (manual or semi-automatic)

  • Splice clips (packaged in reels or strips)

  • Splicing jig or alignment fixture (optional for better precision)
